Social media filters have lately become a tool of technology that significantly changes the visual artistic styles of communication in the cyber environment. Filters have made an awesome impact on adolescent self-awareness and perception processes. because filters turn an average image into an idealistic photo using algorithms that will automatically adjust the user’s appearance, augmented reality (AR) components and pretty filters. this all impacts how teens see themselves and further blurs the lines between their real and virtual identities and their social comparison processes. Generally, social media filters fall into four categories: aesthetic filters (correcting the amount of color and light in a photo), face beautifying filters (smoothing skin, thinning noses, enlarging eyes), augmented reality entertainment filters, and manipulative filters that alter the structure of the face. Not only do filters alter visual perception decoratively but they also affect our minds. Studies indicate that with greater usage of filters by adolescents, the real image of the individual along with the filtered image of the adolescent, which is the result of filters applied to their photo, creates a big visual discrepancy between both. This visual disparity creates low self-confidence, dissatisfaction with body image, and more of a tendency to rely on social approval.
